Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss that challenging objective with almost 100 Brazilian healthcare executives form the private and public sector in the 2nd Access Conference, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

My main message was intended to create a common understanding of the need to collaborate and partner to improve access to healthcare innovation. A critical success factor for the advancement of the healthcare innovation in emerging markets is the need to develop and implement innovative payment models and adapt the local practices and regulations to the new disruptive emerging therapies that demands higher upfront payment with stronger add value – e.g. cell & gene therapies.

How to manage the change? How to implement innovative solutions ?

Personally, I believe is a matter of following certain basic principles when health care payers and pharmaceutical companies design and use new payment models. Off course, the first area requiring to create a common ground is alignment around the innovation “that matters” – e.g. providing meaningful therapeutic benefit, high burden diseases – followed by a better and more collaborative search for potential payment models that take into account the objectives for different stakeholders – patients access to innovation, financial sustainability for the healthcare system and ensuring conditions to foster innovation.

I enjoyed the high level of the discussions, the variety of healthcare stakeholders presenting their complementary views and feel inspired by the level of innovation in the Brazilian healthcare system, including their public system already taking their first steps behind outcome based models.

What do you think about the speed of innovation adoption in Emerging Markets? How do you believe we could accelerate it?
